India is all set to play a five-match prime Test series against Joe Root and company on English soil. As the important series is set to get kicked off in less than 24 hours, Indian skipper Virat Kohli connected with Dinesh Karthik on some vital aspects of Test cricket. Kohli opened up on how the longest format of the game struggled to survive three years back but is moving in fine line now.

The Indian skipper also added that introducing ICC World Test Championship was the correct move in order to keep the importance of the format intact. The players around the world have only come up to keep the format alive and it is not easy on anyone’s part to play the purest form of the game, reckoned the 32-year-old.

“Test cricket would have been in trouble three years back as well, but I think it’s the players that keep Test cricket alive. To be honest, if we did not have the mindset to play Test cricket and be so passionate for it, then it would have taken a huge hit or that would have given a huge blow to Test cricket all over the world. I can assure you that,” Kohli told Karthik as quoted by News18.

Test cricket is absolute pinnacle for me: Virat Kohli

Kohli further added if any team or player wishes to play Test cricket for a longer period, then the relentless approach has to be taken up on the field. It gets difficult at a point and that is where players don’t have enough motivation to stick around. When Karthik questioned, “We need more Virat Kohlis in world cricket to keep Test cricket going. Is that a fair statement?”

“It is a hard one. You have got one, for now, he’s going to give everything for Test cricket till the time he plays. I don’t know about others’ mindset, but for me, this is the absolute pinnacle of the game,” Kohli answered.

India is all set up to play the first Test of the England series at Trent Bridge on August 04.
