The T20I series between Sri Lanka and India seems unlikely to go ahead now as the visiting skipper Shikhar Dhawan has been reportedly tested positive for COVID-19. The second T20I was postponed by a day after the all-rounder Krunal Pandya contracted the virus and the game was supposed to be played today. His eight close contacts including Dhawan were also isolated.

Moreover, all of the close contacts were players and were tested negative on Tuesday evening. However, the players including Krunal were not expected to play in the rest of the T20I series. There were several reports of different players being close contacts of Krunal Pandya even as the speculations around India’s playing XI for the second T20I were being made.

India TV reported the news of Shikhar Dhawan testing positive although there is no official confirmation of the same from either of the cricket boards. It remains to be seen now if the T20I series will go ahead or be cancelled with fears of COVID breaking into the bio-bubble.

Krunal Pandya isolated from the whole team

Meanwhile, Krunal Pandya’s RT PCR test also returned positive and he has been shifted to a different hotel from the Indian team. The rest of the visiting contingent continues to stay at the Taj Samudra hotel and remain in isolation. If the T20I series goes ahead with the second T20I to be played on Wednesday (July 28), Bhuvneshwar Kumar is set to lead India for the first time as Dhawan was not going to play being a close contact.

As of now, according to the schedule, the second and third T20I will be played on consecutive days. Moreover, according to the reports Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav are also among the close contacts of Krunal Pandya. Both the players are named as replacements for the upcoming Test series against England starting from August 4.

They were possibly set to fly to England soon after the T20I series against Sri Lanka. But now their travel plans might have affected even as the BCCI is yet to officially make any announcement regarding the same.
