Brady Wheal became the Player of the Match for his four-wicket haul.
The London Spirit were in all sorts of trouble after losing all their first five matches in the ongoing edition of the Hundred. However, on Tuesday, August 10, the Eoin Morgan-led team ceased their losing streak and beat the Manchester Originals by six runs at the Old Trafford.
Spirit batters make handy contributions
After electing to bat first, the Spirit scored 142 for the loss of six wickets in their 100 balls. Luis Reece perished for a duck, but Adam Rossington’s 29-ball 46 with five fours and one six set the tone for the rest of the innings. Josh Inglis smashed three fours before Matt Parkinson dismissed him.
From there on, the others chipped in with useful cameos to make sure that the Spirit reach a respectable score. Eoin Morgan stayed unbeaten on a 16-ball 22. For the Originals, Tom Hartley was the standout performer as he picked up three wickets for 27 runs.
Colin Ackermann’s knock in vain
The Originals didn’t make the greatest of starts after Joe Clarke and Colin Munro perished cheaply. Phil Salt hit three fours before Bradley Wheal castled him. From there on, Colin Ackermann showed the damage he can do, having scored a 40-ball 53 with three fours and as many sixes.
Tom Lammonby also chipped in with a 20-ball 27 with three fours and one six. Thereafter, Carlos Brathwaite scored 30 off 19 with one four and three sixes but failed to take his team over the line. Wheal picked up four wickets and stood out for the Spirit.

Brathwaite, the Originals’ skipper, was disappointed with his team’s performance. However, he also said that the match was a proper advertisement for the Hundred. Wheal, who became the Player of the Match, was delighted after his bowling spell.
“Had a slow start. Didn’t have much momentum. But we pulled it back well. Today was a good advert for The Hundred. The wicket was not a raging turner. The spinners showed skill. Pleased with the way they came out of it. Didn’t start well with bat or ball. That cost us the game,” Brathwaite said.
“Amazing, we had a great atmosphere here at Old Trafford. Good to get over the line, it’s been a tough tournament so far. (Bowling in pressure situations) That’s what we live for as bowlers. That’s the environment that I love bowling in, just happy to get the boys over the line,” Wheal said.
