London Spirit’s horrendous campaign in the Men’s Hundred continued as they lost their fifth game in a row on Tuesday, August 3. The Eoin Morgan-led team lost to the Northern Superchargers by 63 runs after being restricted to 92 at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.

After electing to bat first, the Superchargers lost their openers Adam Lyth and Chris Lynn early in the innings. However, they made an incredible comeback through Harry Brook and skipper David Willey’s 62-run stand for the third wicket off a mere 34 balls.

After Brook got out on 28, Willey carried on to notch an unbeaten 45-ball 81 with the help of three fours and six sixes. Dane Vilas injected the impetus into the innings, staying unbeaten on 22 off 16. The Superchargers, in the end, got themselves up to 155 for three.

London Spirt strain

Willey carried the confidence into his bowling, dismissing Adam Rossington and Josh Inglis early on. Luis Reece and Eoin Morgan scored 24 and 27 respectively to keep the Spirit in the game. But after they perished, things went downhill for the Spirit very quickly.

For the Spirit, Adil Rashid was again impressive as he picked up two crucial wickets of Morgan and Joe Denly. Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Willey also picked two wickets each. Ben Raine was the standout bowler for the Spirit as he finished with three wickets in his spell.

The guys have worked hard: David Willey

After the Spirit got over the line, Willey, who rightfully got the Player of the Match award, was over the moon. He said that his team has been able to recover from the early blemishes in the tournament.

“I haven’t contributed much so far. So, it’s nice to contribute today. It (captaincy) is a great responsibility to have, a nice bunch of guys and it’s nice to win today. The first two games, we made some small mistakes that cost us,” Willey was quoted as saying.

“The guys have worked hard and we have corrected it. My goal is to stay fit and enjoy my cricket. Every team has some fantastic cricketers,” Willey added.
