Northern Superchargers have managed to go to the top of the points table in the women’s edition of the Hundred. In a low-scoring thriller on Saturday, July 31, the Lauren Winfield-led team defeated the Oval Invincibles by four runs after posting a mere 109 in their first innings. In the meantime, the Invincibles tasted their maiden defeat in the tournament and are currently placed third on the table.

Richards guides the Superchargers

After being put in to bat first, the Superchargers could hardly step on the gas. Jemimah Rodrigues, who got the Player of the Match award in both of the Superchargers’ first two wins, started with three fours. But she perished to Mady Villiers. Skipper Winfield failed to get into double digits. Laura Wolvaardt and Alice Davidson Richards steadied the ship with a partnership of 38 runs off 32 balls.

Alice Capsey dismissed Wolvaardt, but Richards went on to notch on 42 off 30 with five fours. Tash Farrant dismissed her in the last set of five balls, but by then, the batter had already done the damage. The lower couldn’t quite get enough runs. For the Invincibles, Capsey, Farrant, Villiers and Grace Gibbs picked up two wickets each. Dane van Niekerk also bowled well at an economy of 1.40.

Dane van Niekerk’s efforts got in vain

The Invincibles’ run-chase didn’t start on a great note as Richards pinned Capsey early on. However, Georgia Adams and Sarah Bryce got some momentum into the innings. Adams looked good at 26 with four fours before Katie Levick got rid of her. Fran Wilson became Linsey Smith’s maiden victim. The required rate was hardly a problem for the Invincibles, but they strained to go beyond singles.

Bryce and Van Niekerk rotated the strike, but boundaries were the need of the hour. In the second-last set of five balls, the latter smashed Smith for three fours on the trot to make the game interesting, but her efforts went in vain. Van Niekerk started not out on 27 with four fours, however, Richards bowled brilliantly at the death to make sure that the Superchargers’ stay unbeaten in the event.
