Trent Rockets have managed to strengthen their grip atop of the points table in the Men’s Hundred with their third win in a row. On Thursday, July 29, the Lewis Gregory-led team defeated the London Spirit by seven runs at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. Meanwhile, the Spirit are yet to get a win under their belt.
Short takes charge with the bat
After electing to field first, the Spirit did an excellent job as the Rockets were restricted to 123 for four. For the Rockets, barring D’Arcy Short, no other batter could make a significant impact. Short was circumspect, but he also played his shots to bring up a classy half-century off 42 deliveries.
The left-hander played until the very end and stayed unbeaten on 69 off 47 with 10 fours at a strike rate of 146.80. Alex Hales started handsomely to score a 14-ball 21 before Mohammad Nabi accounted for his wicket. Nabi also got the wicket of Dawid Malan, who could have done damage.
Spinners dominate
In the Spirit’s run-chase, batting became an arduous task as the track became low and slow. Josh Inglis and Nabi got into double figures, but couldn’t convert. Eoin Morgan looked good for his 20-ball 18 before Samit Patel got him. At one stage, the Spirit found themselves at 65 for the loss of seven wickets.
Roelof van der Merwe played an unbeaten cameo of 25 off 18, but his efforts went in vain. Mohammad Amir’s 16 and Blake Cullen’s 15 weren’t enough either. Matthew Carter and Samit Patel picked up three wickets each for the Rockets even as Rashid Khan accounted for two wickets in his spell.
It was tough for the new batsmen: D’Arcy Short
Morgan, the Spirit’s skipper, wasn’t happy with his team’s batting and urged the batters to take more responsibility. Short, who became the Player of the Match, said that batting wasn’t an easy task since the spinners got a lot of assistance from the surface.
“I thought we bowled well but we got to take more responsibility with the bat. The home support is fantastic. We got to be logical and it’s simple cricket. Attacking shots didn’t come off, but we failed to take advantage of chasing a target,” Morgan was quoted as saying after the match.
“To be honest I was looking at 150. That last over helped us out at the end. It was a slow pitch, the ball was gripping and holding. It was tough for the new batsmen. The plan in the last over was just to hit out or get out. It is always good to have people out there supporting the game,” Short said.
