National coach Mohammed Ali Qamar was delighted with her strategy of counter-attacking and using her height to good effect.
Back in 2008, Vijender Singh led India to their first boxing medal in Olympics in Beijing. Then in 2012, Mark Kom gave India their second medal in the sport. However, both of them won the bronze medal. Nine years later in 2021, in the Tokyo Olympics, Assam’s Lovlina Borgohain has every chance of winning India’s maiden silver medal or even the gold in boxing.
The 23-year-old has already assured India’s second medal in the Tokyo Olympics after Chanu Saikhom Mirabai won the silver medal in the Women’s 49kg·Weightlifting. On Friday, July 30, Lovlina defeated Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien-Chin in the quarterfinal. The Indian boxer showed domination in the final round and ran away with a split decision margin of 4-1.

Lovlina stamped her authority in the first round, winning by 3-2 and then clean swept the second round. National coach Mohammed Ali Qamar was delighted with her strategy of counter-attacking and using her height to good effect. The coach said that the boxer would have allowed her opponent to make a comeback had she been offensive in her approach.
“She stuck to the plan of counter-attacking and taking advantage of her height. She had tried being aggressive with this girl in the previous bout and lost. So, this time, we told her ‘aap khade raho, usko aane do’,” Qamar was quoted as saying.
“And what a cool mind she displayed, never got excited. Never tried to barge in. She executed the plan to perfection. Had she tried to go on the offensive, she would have ended up getting hit,” he added. Prior to Friday’s match, Lovlina had lost to Chen Nien-Chin in all three instances.
Earlier, Lovlina also won two bronze medals in the Asian Championships and as many bronzes in the World Championships. She will now look to win the Olympic semi-final and aim for the gold medal in the final.
In the meantime, the cricketing fraternity lauded Lovlina for making it through to the semi-finals of the Women’s welterweight boxing. The likes of Mohammad Kaif, Yusuf Pathan and others praised her for her achievements.
