On Sunday (July 25), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the schedule of the second half of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. The tournament will resume on September 19, and all participating teams must gear up to unleash their best show. While some teams would like to continue their sensational run, others would look for a change of fortunes.

Punjab Kings certainly belong to the latter category as they couldn’t do well in the first leg. With three wins in eight games, the KL Rahul-led side was sixth in the team standings at the time of season suspension. This means PBKS need to win five of their remaining six games to secure a berth in the playoffs without any fuss.

This is indeed a hefty challenge for the Mohali-based franchise, and it would be interesting to see how they’ll perform in the remaining games. With dashers like KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle, and Deepak Hooda on song, Punjab did well with the bat in most of the games. However, their bowlers let them down time and again.

Be it Mohammed Shami or Jhye Richardson, none of the Punjab bowlers could restrict the run flow. As a result, the KL Rahul-led side faced one defeat after another. Too much cutting and chopping was a reason behind the side’s downfall. Hence, identifying their best line-up would be the team management’s first challenge.

Going by the current points table and performances, many are not backing PBKS to cross the league stage in IPL 2021. However, one must not forget their knack of defying the odds. Punjab were in a similar position last year as well. However, they stunned one and all by registering five consecutive wins in the latter half of the competition.

Although their sensational effort couldn’t earn them a playoff berth last season, a similar show in IPL 2021 would surely see them ending in the top four. Meanwhile, Punjab Kings will resume their campaign against Rajasthan Royals on September 21.
