Chennai Super Kings would have been one of the most disappointed teams when Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 was suspended earlier this year due to the COVID-19 virus. Having won five of their first seven games, the MS Dhoni-led side was on a roll and a place in the playoffs was just a couple of steps away.  However, the second wave of the global pandemic halted their staggering campaign for a while.

Nevertheless, IPL 2021 is set to resume on September 19, and CSK would like to carry on from where they left off. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the competition’s schedule on Sunday (July 25), and CSK fans must have marked their calendars. After all, their favorite team didn’t do much wrong in the first half of the season.

They couldn’t start the season well, suffering a seven-wicket defeat against Delhi Capitals in their first assignment. However, they bounced back emphatically and registered five victories on the trot. As a result, the Men in Yellow were second in the points table at the time of season suspension. This also means CSK need just three wins in their remaining seven league-stage games to earn a place in the playoffs without any fuss.

For the unversed, CSK had a point to prove this season as they suffered a horrendous campaign last year. MS Dhoni’s men, for the very first time in IPL history, failed to qualify for the playoffs, having lost eight of their 14 league-stage games. Questions were raised over the team combination, strategy, and approach. Even, Dhoni’s place in the playing XI also came under the scanner.

However, the Super Kings roared back in IPL 2021 and showed why they won the title thrice. The likes of Faf du Plessis, Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali, and Sam Curran were CSK’s stand-out performers in the tournament. Although MS Dhoni wasn’t really at his best with the bat, his sharp glovework and précised on-field decisions played a crucial role in CSK’s stellar run. Meanwhile, the Chennai-based side will resume its campaign against Mumbai Indians on September 19.
