Sri Lanka, on Friday, July 23, beat India in the third match of the three-game ODI series by three wickets at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The Islanders also managed to garner their second win in the ODI Super League and are placed 11th with 22 points from 12 matches.

Meanwhile, despite the victory, Dasun Shanaka and Co. lost the series 1-2. Shikhar Dhawan’s India, on the other hand, are placed fourth below England, Bangladesh, and Australia. The Men in Blue have 49 points from nine games.

The Brits are the table-toppers with 95 points from 15 games, having also beaten Pakistan 3-0 off late. New Zealand and Afghanistan are placed in the middle of the table, but the two teams are yet to lose a match in the championship.

As far as the game on Friday was concerned, Avishka Fernando became the Player of the Match for his 98-ball 76 with four fours and one six. India picked up late wickets, but the Lankans held their nerve to go past the finishing line after straining for a wee bit.

After India’s loss, Dhawan accepted that his team was around 50 runs short of where they should have been. Shanaka, on the other hand, was delighted after the Lankans secured a win.

“It didn’t go our way. We got a good start but again we lost too many wickets in the middle overs. We were 50 runs short in the end. I am glad the players made their debut because everyone was in quarantine for such a long time.

“I always analyse where I can improve and get better in strategies. Of course, we were positive that we could defend the target but we knew that we were short,” Dhawan was quoted as saying.

“Congrats to India for winning the series. I am really happy with how we played. The bowlers showed maturity, that’s what I expect from the youngsters. I hope they will continue this in future tours as well. When you play international cricket for long, the guys will improve and play consistently. It is a very big win for the fans,” Shanaka said.
