India’s middle-order batsman Manish Pandey’s case has been pretty curious, especially in the One-Day Internationals. He has been around forever now but is yet to seal his place in the side. Rather he can be termed unlucky as well as he has played only around 29 ODIs since making his debut in the format way back in 2015. Lack of consistent chances has played a role in Pandey being inconsistent as well.

In the midst of all the uncertainties, came the Sri Lanka tour and when the squad was announced, it was clear that Manish Pandey was going to play all three ODIs given his experience. And as expected, he got to bat in all the three matches of the series.

However, he hasn’t done much to prove his credentials. In the first game, in a pretty straightforward run-chase of 263 runs, Pandey scored 26 runs when he had a chance to stay till the end and finish the game for India. He looked in ominous touch for his 37 runs in the 276-run chase before getting run-out in an unfortunate manner at the non-striker’s end.

Manish Pandey fails in 3rd ODI as well

Opportunity knocked on his door in the third and final ODI on Friday as well. Even though India made six changes to the team, the management decided to stick to Manish Pandey in the line-up and let him bat at four once again. The platform was set for him as well with India at 102/2 in the 16th over when he came out to bat.

But the Karnataka batsman couldn’t latch on to the opportunity and could score only 11 runs off 19 balls during his brief stay in the middle. Praveen Jayawickrama got the better of him and the dejected look on the face of the 31-year-old was visible.

Manish Pandey has now scored 566 runs in 24 ODI innings of his career at an average of 33.29 with a century and two fifties. With so much competition for places in the team, this might just be it for him according to many fans. With age also not on his side, it remains to be seen if the selectors will give him another chance in the 50-over format again.

Meanwhile, the fans were also frustrated with the way Manish failed in the series as he could only 74 runs in three innings in the series against Sri Lanka.
